In contrast to Black Star counterpart Mos Def, Talib
Kweli hasn't strayed too far from what put the duo on
the map. That doesn't mean Kweli's best work didn't
come earlier in his career, specifically Black Star and
Reflection Eternal with DJ Hi-Tek. It's just that he's
been a solid contributor as a solo artist. My theory is
that buckling down with a collaborator brings out the
fire in the Brooklyn MC, hence high expectations for
Liberation. Madlib is a legendary Cali producer that
has worked with MF Doom, Jay Dee, Alkaholiks, Lootpack,
De La Soul and more, but that only scratches the
surface of his musical contributions. Liberation is
offered as a free download for Hip Hop fans. Now that's
a nice way to open up the new year.
Liberation weighs in at nine tracks and about 30
minutes in length, so it makes a quick first
impression. Madlib can often have a deep jazz and soul
influence and he usually crafts unique soundscapes, so
there was no danger of a "been there, done that"
feeling for Kweli fans. The main question was would
they both bring their A game? All concerns were
dismissed by the single "Funny Money", as Talib calls
out shady promoters and anyone who turns funny when it
comes down to finances. "My kids can't eat my love of
Hip Hop, this ain't the circus I ain't see no Big Top".
Lyrically Talib is on point, whether it's spinning
stick-up tales with Consequence on "Engine Runnin" or
the three family stories of "Happy Home". Unfortunately
the latter loses a couple of points for an irritating
hook. Kweli gets a chance to straight-up flex skills on
"The Show", "Time Is Right" and "The Function"
featuring west coast Blacksmith signees Strong Arm
Steady. Madlib even cooked up a little something to
test your car systems on the bouncy "Over the Counter",
as opposed to the appropriately named "Soul Music"
proving that Madlib's diverse talents run the gamut.
CD buyers seem to be a dying breed so it's not shocking
to see an album available for free download, legally
that is. What is surprising is that the free album
happens to be Talib's best work in a while. Liberation
ranks above the new Blacksmith mixtape, Right About Now
and Beautiful Struggle, plus gives Quality a run for
its money. With the whole label thing taking off and
his next solo Eardrum around the corner, 2007 might be
a banner year for Talib. What I do know is that Kweli
and Madlib need to link up and get back in the studio
again, but I guess you could put that on my wishlist
after new Black Star and Reflection Eternal albums.
