Û°Û Mood Swings, the new album from Small Sins, Û°Û
Û°Û starts with a bang--literally. "If you give me Û°Û
Û°Û the gun, well, I'll shoot myself in the foot" are Û°Û
Û°Û the first words on the album sung by Small Sins Û°Û
Û°Û frontman/mastermind Thomas D'Arcy. He doesn't Û°Û
Û°Û stop there. Nearly every song on Mood Swings Û°Û
Û°Û ricochets with gun imagery--a stunning contrast Û°Û
Û°Û to the album's hypnotic tapestry of shimmering Û°Û
Û°Û electronics, organic instrumentation, and Û°Û
Û°Û D'Arcy's ongoing quest for the most shameless pop Û°Û
Û°Û hooks possible. "It wasn't on purpose," D'Arcy Û°Û
Û°Û explains, claiming that, other than a short stint Û°Û
Û°Û in his university gun club, he's no firearms Û°Û
Û°Û enthusiast. "It's a good metaphor for what I was Û°Û
Û°Û trying to say this time. A loaded weapon is Û°Û
Û°Û something anxious: there's always the underlying Û°Û
Û°Û potential to explode." Û°Û

Û°Û Don't be surprised, then, if Mood Swings, Û°Û
Û°Û D'Arcy's second album under the Small Sins Û°Û
Û°Û moniker, blows up: he's aiming at newer, higher Û°Û
Û°Û targets following the success of Small Sins' Û°Û
Û°Û self-titled Boompa debut. Small Sins proved a Û°Û
Û°Û masterpiece of wistful chamber-pop, its hushed, Û°Û
Û°Û electro-tinged narratives of love lost and found Û°Û
Û°Û finding wide acclaim. Blender called it a "lovely Û°Û
Û°Û piece of campfire synth-pop", while Spin opined Û°Û
Û°Û memorably, "Imagine if Jack White had a crush on Û°Û
Û°Û Kraftwerk." But after touring relentlessly with Û°Û
Û°Û the likes of Scissor Sisters and Sloan, D'Arcy's Û°Û
Û°Û modus operandi for Small Sins began to change. Û°Û
Û°Û For one, it started to resemble an actual rock Û°Û
Û°Û band. Well, sort of, anyway... Û°Û
Û°Û Û°Û
Û°Û D'Arcy had been puzzled by Small Sins' initial Û°Û
Û°Û comparisons to the likes of Postal Service and Û°Û
Û°Û Grandaddy. Once people started seeing the band Û°Û
Û°Û live, however, critical assessments flew all over Û°Û
Û°Û the place. Some heard Talking Heads, or the Û°Û
Û°Û Buzzcocks, or Neil Young--indicating that Small Û°Û
Û°Û Sins was coming into its own sound. D'Arcy found Û°Û
Û°Û performing live actually transformed Mood Swings' Û°Û
Û°Û material, too. "The first record's low, whispery Û°Û
Û°Û stuff was hard to project, so I put everything up Û°Û
Û°Û an octave to sing it live," he explains. "Once I Û°Û
Û°Û started singing more, I got more creative with Û°Û
Û°Û the melodies I was coming up with. I really found Û°Û
Û°Û my range, and it made the new songs so much more Û°Û
Û°Û vivid." Û°Û
Û°Û Û°Û
Û°Û Off the road, the touring ensemble found Û°Û
Û°Û themselves occasionally writing together, making Û°Û
Û°Û it inevitable that D'Arcy would involve the band Û°Û
Û°Û members in the making of Mood Swings. Typically, Û°Û
Û°Û the players rarely worked together at the same Û°Û
Û°Û time. Instead, D'Arcy brought in individual Û°Û
Û°Û members to add unique flavour to the songs, Û°Û
Û°Û moving them between his basement, traditional Û°Û
Û°Û studios, and other unexpected spaces (K-OS even Û°Û
Û°Û loaned D'Arcy his personal digital playground for Û°Û
Û°Û a year). Mood Swings' experimental but Û°Û
Û°Û collaborative approach extended even to the Û°Û
Û°Û album's mix process, for which D'Arcy traveled to Û°Û
Û°Û Chicago to work with legendary studio guru John Û°Û
Û°Û McEntire (Tortoise, Stereolab, Sea and Cake, Mary Û°Û
Û°Û Timony). Û°Û
Û°Û Û°Û
Û°Û Mood Swings proves even richer and more assured Û°Û
Û°Û than what D'Arcy himself felt he was ever capable Û°Û
Û°Û of. Each song provides a major stepping stone in Û°Û
Û°Û D'Arcy's mission to create the ideal pop artifact Û°Û
Û°Û with Mood Swings: a cycle that works Û°Û
Û°Û track-by-track for the iPod generation, but Û°Û
Û°Û ultimately stands on its own. "I made Mood Swings Û°Û
Û°Û for those music fans who still actually listen to Û°Û
Û°Û albums--it should be experienced as a whole," Û°Û
Û°Û D'Arcy explains. "At the same time, when I was Û°Û
Û°Û kid, I mostly listened to oldies radio hits, like Û°Û
Û°Û Elvis and Chubby Checker, so I'm obsessed with Û°Û
Û°Û the idea of the simple, perfect pop song. That's Û°Û
Û°Û the most important thing: whatever the Û°Û
Û°Û instrumentation, I want everything to be quick, Û°Û
