Û Ý Û ones at any rate): they spin their webs and catch Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û moments, memories, emotions, and people too. Some Û ÝÛ

Û Ý Û suddenly breaks into a smile when you least expect, Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û and some bully you into submission or knock you out Û ÝÛ

Û Ý Û Wonder’s Talking Book and recite lyrics verbatim from Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Joni’s Blue. I love Steely Dan so much that I even Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û spent hours learning the guitar solo from Reeling in Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û the Years.....very slowly though. Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û I have family. They’re good, not too weird, and Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û scattered over many continents. The same goes for my Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û friends. I got to live in India for a bit as a kid, Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û and there was no FM radio there back then. But there Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û was Michael Jackson, and the first record I can Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û remember really wanting to own was Thriller, and I Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û saved up for it and salivated over the gatefold Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û sleeve and honestly thought it was ok to have a Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û monkey for a best friend. One day, a piano arrived in Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û our home and I took up residence at, on, and Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û literally in it. I only ventured out to roller skate Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û to Ravel’s Bolero and to buy my first guitar with my Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û pocket money when I was 11. I desperately wanted my Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û mother to be a pushy stage mother, but she was Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û acutely aware of what happened to Tiffany, and would Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û rather I learnt Bobbie Gentry songs. Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û So, if the only encouragement I was going to get at Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û home involved my mother’s country record collection Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û and her burgeoning Ravi Shankar library (it reminded Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û her of home, it reminded everybody else of the local Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Indian restaurant), I was going to have to find rock Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û and roll somewhere else. It arrived when I was 12 Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û years old, her name was Elvira, her folks were like, Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û totally bohemian, and after a few years she worked Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û her magic on me and I found my mojo. Well, kind of. I Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û became obsessed with Bon Jovi and the Stone Roses. Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û But while I strummed along to Living on a Prayer Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û (which I still maintain is a perfect pop song), I Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û also decided to give my parent’s record collection Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û one last chance, and it was a good job too. It Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û yielded a couple of gems: Simon and Garfunkel’s Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Greatest Hits and Carole King’s Tapestry. I thought Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Paul Simon should win a Nobel prize for the lines Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û “still a man hears what he wants to hear and Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û disregards the rest” (The Boxer). And I liked Carole Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û King because a lot of her songs were in easy keys and Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û she had a kind of funny voice too which made me feel Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û better about my own. I didn’t really know what it Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û meant to sing “there’ll be good times again for me Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û and you”, because I was a kid, but I kind of know now Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û and I love her all the more because of it. Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Cut to the chase, I ditch the glasses, the braces, Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û the knee high socks and I emerge, butterfly like, and Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û fly off from my little island in the English Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û channel...... And land, courtesy of a scholarship, in Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û a forbidding English boarding school. Wide eyed, Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û socially inept and by now playing violin and singing Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û opera too. After the pressure cooker of being a Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û musical wunderkind, I move to London and enroll in Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û art college. Everybody was stoned, which was fun for Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û a while, but I could only listen to The Doors so much Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û and after 5 all night readings of On the Road I was Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û ready to go back to music school. Here, I continued Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û studying classical piano and singing, although Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û eventually putting my violin back in its case after Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û deciding cello players had way more fun and I wanted Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û some of that. I found that while I loved writing Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û songs at the piano, those old country records I Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û reluctantly grew up listening to had crept in Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û somewhere and I could only get that feeling if I Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û wrote on guitar. On my travels I spied a Hofner bass, Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û and decided if I had that I would almost certainly Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û want to play every day. That was one long summer Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û spent indoors listening to the White Album over and Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û over and slowly picking out McCartney’s unbelievable Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û playing on Sexy Sadie. (It’s ok, it mostly rains in Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û the great British summer, so I wasn’t so unhappy to Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û be inside.....) Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û And then one day I woke up and I was in the real Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û world, with a proper job (ok, not that proper, it was Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û at a record company) working for Mr King. He warned Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û me against dabbling with the devil that is the major Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û label, (he even threatened to break someone’s legs on Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û my behalf), but I carried on regardless and made a Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û record with a very ridiculous title and some even Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û more questionable photographic evidence. This Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û experience taught me many things, but especially that Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û it is never a good idea to make a video in which you Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û fly. Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Which is where Sophia comes in. I wrote it around the Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û time I went back to university in London, where I Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û have been learning to love learning, and how to find Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û the words to sing about what we talk about when we Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û talk about love. Being as balefully pessimistic as I Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û am (all my self help hippy dippy affirmations Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û notwithstanding), I am now on my second ‘Gap’ year, Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û as after deferring for one year to see how things Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û went, the sky did not fall. And, as the end of the Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û world was not nigh a few months ago, I deferred Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û again. Things were not a disaster. In fact, when my Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û second album ‘Fires’ was released in April 2005, the Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û press did not send me dog poo in the post and there Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û was not a resounding silence on the radio stations of Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Great Britain. (Listen, no one was more surprised Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û than I, so this is no blowing of personal trumpets, Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û okay?) People seemed to - shock!horror! – quite like Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û it. They actually bought the bloody thing. Perhaps Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û this was because Wendy Melvoin, one of the album’s Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û producers, wrote to me, warning “You’d best have a Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û hit girlfriend cause Momma needs some new shoes”; Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Eric Rosse had a son and needed to buy nappies and Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Howard Willing acquired a vintage guitar addiction – Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û so I was well aware that there were some very lovely Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û producer people depending on me. So too is my tour Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û manager. I have finally arrived, friends: I have Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û staff. With this comes untold responsibility. Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Consequently, after a year of touring up and down the Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û UK with the likes of Suzanne Vega, Joseph Arthur, Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Missy Higgins, Paddy Casey and Sheryl Crow, and a Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û record four sessions with Janice Long on Radio 2 (and Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û buying at least one item from what seems like every Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û branch of ‘Accessorize’ in the country), I am ending Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û the year with a slightly plusher turkey on my table Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û than I might have imagined at the start of 2005. Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û Idaho, my little label that could not have existed Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û without Chrysalis Music Publishing (who look after Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û me), is being adopted by new parents. They live in a Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û mansion and have a Bentley and will give my kids the Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û life I always wanted for them but feared might not be Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û possible. Upon signing to 14th Floor Records, I made Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û sure that my prospective A&R man can pronounce my Û ÝÛ
Û Ý Û name perfectly. He does, and I like to think this Û ÝÛ
