Его лейбл «Sony» неохотно соглашался вкладывать миллионы долларов в казавшийся бесконечным процесс записи, перезаписи и последующей раскрутки альбома, что в конечном счёте привело к уходу певца на лейбл Epic Records. «Invincible» (Непобедимый), выпущенный в октябре 2001, содержал 16 треков, включая сингл «You Rock My World», в клипе к которому снялся легендарный Марлон Брандо и Крис Такер. Альбом обрадовал поклонников, но был разгромлен критиками, а цифры его продаж были в два раза скромнее, чему у «HIStory».
