About This Release ....................................... : : : The story of 48May begins in the heart of Hamilton's : : student district, not far from Waikato University, in : : an area where recycling bins sit stacked high with beer : : bottles and overgrown lawns are littered with pizza : : boxes and outdoor couches. : : : : It was in this neighbourhood where the four members of : : 48May, at that stage in four different bands, began : : hanging out and considering their musical futures back : : in 2002. : : : : Jon Austin (lead vocals/guitar), was a journalism : : student in Auckland, and could see his dream of : : becoming a musician fading. He travelled down to : : Hamilton, to see his best friend Jody Stowers (Captain : : Hook - guitar), who was playing in a local band. Hook : : had been hanging out at Jarrod Brown's (drums) flat at : : 48 May St and they had been writing some music : : together. Jarrod was then taking lead vocals in : : Auckland rock band Mama Said, while his bass playing : : brother Shannon, who had left that band, was on tour : : down south with Tadpole. : : : : "I would always ring up Jarrod and bitch after shows, : : 'Fuck I hate this, I wanna come home man'." : : : : 48May were born out of that frustration. They all began : : hanging out at Jarrod's flat, partying and jamming and : : realised they had a full band between them. Jon had : : been writing some songs so they went into a practise : : room to see what would happen. : : : : "We'd continuously get together round at 48 May St and : : then we moved through to a jam room with four complete : : songs and thought 'This feels really good'," says : : Shannon. : : : : 48May's official birthday is Big Day Out 2003. It was : : there in a huddle, after Shannon's last gig with : : Tadpole, the four of them decided to give it a shot. : : : : Jarrod says 48May has been a different experience which : : is reflected in their productivity. : : : : "Because we've all been in other bands before no one's : : got any attitudes and no one's possessive of anything, : : and everyone has equal respect for each others' ideas. : : Everything gets used so how can you not write fast?" : : : : Indeed things have happened pretty quickly for 48May. : : They signed with FMR in September and their debut album : : 'The Mad Love' has been in stores since October and : : charting well. Packed with pop-punk singles, harmonies, : : hooks and sing-along choruses it is a lush production. : : : : Production credits go to Welshman Greg Haver whose : : major league credits include Manic Street Preachers and : : The Super Furry Animals. The band met and worked with : : him after one of the first songs they wrote and : : recorded was selected for Haver's production treatment : : for the Resonate conference in 2003. : : : : Initially they were going to turn this opportunity : : down. They had their recording grant and didn't want to : : risk coming out of Resonate with a sound they didn't : : like. It took Brendan Smyth from NZ On Air to convince : : them otherwise. : : : : "I'm really glad we did Resonate," says Shannon. "Greg : : had a real strong vibe for the song (Fight Back) and we : : went in and recorded over two or three days and had so : : much fun with him. We just had a ball and the song came : : out sounding really good." : : : : After prolific writing sessions they decided there was : : no need to wait to put out an album. They got back in : : touch with Haver, sc[CENSORED]d some money together and got : : him to produce the album for a reduced fee while he was : : out here producing the feelers' third album 'Playground : : Battle'. Drum tracks were recorded at York St Studios : : in two days and the rest was done at Hamilton's Dudley : : Studios in about five weeks. : : : : "He just kind of captured what we were doing well. He : : put a bit of sparkle on it - while we were more into : : the raw energy and the rock, he put a nice little sheen : : on it," says Jarrod. : : : :...........................................................: ..
